How Color Plays a Role in Home Selling

Color can make quite the statement whether it is a statement wall in your kitchen or a bold color on your front door. How you use that color makes a difference when you are trying to sell your home so it is something to keep in mind if you plan to list your home on the market.

In a survey conducted by Better Homes and Gardens 400 homeowners were asked about their color preferences and they had strong opinions on how and where colors should be used. Certain colors were overwhelmingly chosen as colors not to be used either at all or in very limited instances. Orange was deemed too bold and both black and violet also made the cut.

One of the main issues among homeowners is that they will tire of the color chosen for the walls so it is important to not drown your home in overwhelming color. Certain spaces are more popular for the more saturated hues like the kitchen, living room and bathroom. Other spaces would fair better with a more neutral tone. The foyer, adult bedrooms and dining rooms are a more suitable place for a more subdued tone. Of all the colors blue was the most popular choice for a color palette. The range of warm tones of green came in second with the neutral tones coming in third.

If you are planning to list your home and are considering your color scheme it is a more popular opinion to create accent spaces as opposed to large swathes of color. Using a more neutral tone on walls, ceilings and floor is best while using accessories as your statement color pieces.

On the outside of your home your color choice should be a more natural tone for the exterior while making your statement come in the form of a colorful front door or shutters.

While living in your home it  is important to make it your own but if you do make a bold choice in color just be prepared to repaint if necessary when it comes time to sell. Appealing to a wide range of buyers is key and making them be able to see themselves in the space and is essential to a successful listing.
